Aesthetics of Participation

Can public art impact democracy? Join us for a roundtable discussion on the role and impact of public art in Toronto!

According to the City of Toronto, art is “a public benefit to be enjoyed and experienced by residents and visitors throughout the city” (“Percent for Public Art Program”). Can experiencing public art be a force for democratic participation?

Join us for a lively discussion with artists Bram Morrison (of the musical group Sharon, Lois & Bram), Peter Morin, and Melanie Yan to explore how our experiences of public art and street aesthetics impact our participation in urban life.

Discussants:

  • Lauren Knight (PhD Candidate, Faculty of Information)
  • Nadia Mariyan Smith (PhD Student, Faculty of Information)
  • Jingshu Yao (PhD Student, Faculty of Information)

Aesthetics of Participation is led by Stanka Radovic (Associate Professor, Department of English and Drama, UTM and Department of English) and supported by the School of Cities Urban Challenge Grant 4.0: Humanities: democracy focus.
