The School of Cities is excited to welcome the Urban Policy Lab (UPL) as a new affiliated initiative. Founded and led by Prof. Gabriel Eidelman and based at U of T’s Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, the Lab serves as a training ground for urban policy professionals, designed to inspire and prepare Munk School students for careers focused on cities. Prof. Eidelman will join the School of Cities’ leadership team and lead two School projects, coordinating a new policy brief series and serving as knowledge mobilization lead for the $2.5M SSHRC-funded Canadian Municipal Barometer partnership.
“We have worked with Professor Eidelman for several years and in many capacities, and are excited to grow our collaboration in the vital and dynamic areas of policy, governance, and municipal leadership,” says Karen Chapple, Director of the School of Cities.
Lab students will work with School of Cities researchers to distill and translate their academic findings into impactful policy recommendations, starting with a series of papers on inequality, data and democracy.
UPL and the School of Cities will also work together to disseminate findings from the Barometer’s annual surveys of mayors and councillors in more than 1,000 Canadian municipalities on the themes of public policy, multilevel governance, diverse representation, and elections and voting.
“By working alongside the School of Cities, our students will gain new opportunities to translate ideas into action, learn directly from leading researchers and practitioners, and prepare for impactful careers shaping the future of cities.” – Gabriel Eidelman, Director, Urban Policy Lab
