Harald Bathelt, Professor of Geography in the Department of Geography and Planning at University of Toronto, recently published an article with Max Buchholz (Postdoctoral Fellow, UCLA) and John Cantwell (Professor, Rutgers) in Competitiveness Review. The paper develops an argument as to how outward directed foreign direct investments are linked to urban development cycles in the investing region. They found that these investment activities may stimulate positive feedback mechanisms and income growth in city-regions or support stagnation and decline.
